This is the Sydney Cracked Screen Index: published, walk-in prices for 20 popular phones, collected on 2 November 2026 from 6 independent Sydney repair shops and from Apple's and Samsung's own repair estimators. No phone quotes and no mystery shopping — only prices anyone can check. The independents are anonymised: this is a picture of the market, not a league table.

✓ The short version. An independent iPhone screen costs a median 32% of Apple's price — the iPhone 15 is $149 against Apple's $465. Galaxy phones run the other way: Samsung's own estimate was at or below the independent median on 5 of 5 models. And shops disagree a lot — the same iPhone 15 screen is advertised anywhere from $99 to $260.

iPhone screen repair prices

Apple's figure is its out-of-warranty estimate with genuine Apple parts. The independent figure is the median of each shop's cheapest published price for that model — usually an aftermarket screen.

ModelAppleIndependent medianRangeShops
iPhone 11$329$109$95–$1606
iPhone 12$465$134$99–$1706
iPhone 13$465$149$99–$2005
iPhone 13 Pro$465$159$99–$2406
iPhone 14$465$149$99–$2005
iPhone 14 Pro$549$159$99–$2906
iPhone 15$465$149$99–$2605
iPhone 15 Pro$549$164$99–$3006
iPhone 15 Pro Max$645$174$99–$3806
iPhone 16$465$159$99–$3206
iPhone 16 Pro$549$169$99–$3505
iPhone 16 Pro Max$645$199$99–$4505
iPhone 17$549$220$179–$2493
iPhone 17 Pro$549$220$179–$2993

The gap is mostly the part. Apple fits its own display and prices it accordingly; independents mostly fit aftermarket panels, which range from close-to-original to noticeably dimmer. A cheap quote is not automatically a bad one, but it is a different product — ask which panel you're getting.

Galaxy S25 Ultra$437$450$349–$4894
Galaxy A55$279fewer than 3 shops$129–$1692

Samsung's figure is its estimate for the Screen Repair service at an authorised centre, with genuine parts. Independents' cheapest Galaxy screens came in at a median 108% of Samsung's price. For the Galaxy S23 Samsung also lists a dearer Screen Replacement (a full display module); we've used the Screen Repair figure for every model because it's the one Samsung offers across the range.

Batteries show a much smaller gap than screens: independents' cheapest battery is a median 86% of Apple's price. Too few shops publish per-model Galaxy battery prices for a fair median, so they're left out.

Why quotes differ so much

1. The panel technology

OLED panels (every recent flagship) cost two to four times what an LCD does. Foldables are in their own league again — a Galaxy Z Fold inner screen is one of the most expensive parts in any phone. If your quote seems high for a new flagship, the part price is usually the reason.

2. Part quality: OEM vs aftermarket

This is the biggest source of the quote spread. A genuine OEM panel is identical to what left the factory. A premium aftermarket panel meets or exceeds the original spec — we fit both, and always tell you which is which. A budget aftermarket panel can be dimmer, with washed-out colour and touch response that misses taps — which is why it's worth asking what's behind a very low quote. We go deeper on OEM vs aftermarket here.

3. What "screen repair" includes

A fair quote includes the part, fitting, full testing (touch, True Tone/brightness sensors, Face ID alignment on iPhones) and a written warranty. Ask these three questions of any shop:

  • Is the price for glass only, or the full display assembly?
  • What warranty do I get in writing, and for how long?
  • If the screen turns out not to be the problem, do I pay anything?
✓ Our policy: free diagnostic, price confirmed before any work starts, and a 6–12 month warranty on every screen. If we can't fix it, you don't pay. See screen repair pricing →

Repair, claim, or replace?

A quick framework. Repair if the phone is under ~3 years old and the quote is under a quarter of the replacement cost — which covers almost every screen we see. Claim on insurance only if your excess is meaningfully below the repair price (it often isn't). Replace the phone when the screen is one of several failing parts — at that point, put the money toward the upgrade instead. We walk through the full decision in repair or upgrade?

The bottom line

For an iPhone, an independent repair is usually the cheaper route — roughly a third of Apple's price at the median — as long as you know which panel you're paying for. For a current Galaxy, get Samsung's own estimate first; it's often the benchmark to beat. Whoever you choose, get the part type and the warranty in writing.

Methodology

  • Collected: 2 November 2026. Prices change; treat this as a snapshot.
  • Published prices only: each figure was read from a repairer's own website or from Apple's and Samsung's online repair estimators. We didn't request quotes or contact any shop.
  • Who's included: 6 independent repairers with walk-in stores in Sydney that publish per-model prices. Shops that only offer quote forms, or aren't in Sydney, were excluded. Independents are labelled A–F in the data. Express Repairs is not included.
  • How the median works: each shop counts once per model, at its cheapest published price for that repair. A median is shown only where at least 3 shops publish a price.
  • Exclusions: rows where a shop's own pages contradict each other, and prices published without saying what they're for. Charging ports are left out — too few shops publish a per-model port replacement price.
  • "From" prices: where a shop publishes one "from" price for a group of models, it's used for each model in the group.
  • GST: Samsung and one independent state their prices include GST; the rest don't say. Australian consumer prices normally include GST.
  • OEM figures: Apple — out-of-warranty "estimated service cost" for genuine parts. Samsung — Repair Cost Estimator, Screen Repair and battery services.
